From the 12th to the 15th of November ICAN Norway hosted the “Nuclear Disarmament Youth Seminar 2015”.
The event was aimed at fostering an international conversation around the theme of nuclear disarmament, especially among a younger audience. The seminar brought together participants from Colombia, Tunisia, Togo, Kenya, Nigeria, Norway and Italy.
The program for the seminar was varied and encouraged discussion on a number of issues. Highlights of the arrangement included:
- a presentation by Camilla Waszink, project coordinator at the International Law and Policy Institute (ILPI) in Oslo, on the possibility of a treaty banning nuclear weapons given the current state of international law;
- a workshop with the parliamentarian Torstein Tvedt Solberg on the do’s and don’ts of political lobbying;
- a guided tour to the Norwegian Parliament;
- an open meeting with Grethe Østern from Norwegian People’s Aid, Ole Elvestuen from the Liberal Party and Torstein Tvedt Solberg on the Norwegian role in the UN with regards to nuclear disarmament;
- a visit to the nuclear reactor located in the neighbouring town of Kjeller;
- the preparation of a new campaign video with the assistance of the communication agency Von Kommunikasjon.
The seminar provided an exciting setting for the participants to confront the theme of nuclear disarmament from a number of different perspectives. ICAN Norway was very satisfied with the outcome of the event, and is already looking forward to next year!
